Differences between discussion forums and blogs

In a forum any person who is a member or part of the community can post whereas on a blog you can't post unless it's your blog.
Anyone can add a comment to a persons blog, but to add to a forum you need to be a member of the forum community.

Multimedia Message Service (MMS)

What is MMS?
Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is a way to send a message from one phone to another. The difference is that MMS can include not just text, but also sound, images and video. It is also possible to send MMS messages from a mobile phone to an email address.
Formats that can be embedded within MMS include:

  • Images (JPEG, GIF format)
  • Audio (MP3, MIDI)
  • Video (MPEG)
How it works?
MMS works by using a combination of SMS (Short Messaging Service) and WAP (Wireless Application Protocol).
What device it is used on?
MMS is used on mobile phones.
Any other additional info?
The first MMS capable phones started to appear in 2002.

GPRS

What is GPRS?
GPRS is short for General Packet Radio Service it is also a way to enhance 2G phones to enable them to send and recieve data at an increased rate.

With a GPRS connection, the phone is "always on" and can transfer data immediately, and at a higher speeds. An additional advantage is that data can be transferred at the same time as making a voice call.

GPRS is part of a series of technologies that are designed to move 2G networks closer to the performance of 3G networks.
The key characteristic of a 3G network is its ability to transfer large amounts of data at high speed. This then enables applications such as video calls, video downloads, web browsing and emails. Some of these applications become possible by increasing the speeds of a 2G network, these technologies are calles 2.5G and include enhancements to the CSD (Circuit Switchboard Data) technology.

Personally i think that GPRS is a huge advantage because if you like your current phone, but it doesn't have 3G, you can use GPRS to increase the speeds of your 2G network so you can be able to video call people that maybe live far away, download videos onto your phone and the use of other great applications become possible.

WAP & GSM

WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol and is mainly used for web access in mobile phones.
Most of today's mobile phones, smartphones and PDAs come with a built in WAP browser. With a WAP browser, you can access dedicated WAP pages while on the move.
As WAP phones have smaller screens, content is oftenly fairly basic, so pages are quite efficient and downloaded quickly.

GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communications and is the most popular standard for mobile telephony systems in the world.
GSM differs from its predecessor technologies in that both signaling and speech channels are digital, and thus GSM is considered second generation (2G) mobile phone system.

Forums

I think forums are good because you can share your oppinions on different subjects with a wide variety of people and also get their opinions and views which could help you make a decision on something.

What important information from W3C will you now consider before you produce a website?

World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
First thing is that you must not have more than 3 flashes per second because it could cause Seizures.
It is also important to take the following factors into consideration because it could limit people's accessability:
a. No internet access
b. Compatibility
c. Language
d. Limited resources
e. Interests
f. Funding
g. Disabilities
h. Countries Laws

The Web Content Accessability Guidlines are to allow people to improve access for everyone not just the average person, people who suffer from a long term disability often use the computer so making the computer/internet more compatible for them is a key objective. Guidelines are to keep people on the right path to learn from the mistakes of those before them to create what the user wants.

SMS

SMS is short for Short Messaging Service and is used by millions, even billions of people all around the world on a day to day basis.
SMS is also referred to as texting, it is where people can send a message or a "text" to other people from their phone to another.
I myself am a frequent texter and before now didn't really know what it stood for but now knowing I'm not really that surprised.
